Soul Talk
The soul speaks. You’ve likely heard it in a moment when an inner voice tells you to pay attention to something, a change, an invitation, a restlessness within. Or times when a quandary suddenly crystalizes into an awakening. But we spend little time practicing the art of listening to our own soul talk. We are unpracticed in the art of deep listening to the rhythm of life and to how God meets us there.
The world offers few safe places to wonder and wander with others through the spiritual landscape of the soul, to contend for our faith and wrestle with the angels, as Jacob did, asking God to reveal new identities and new pathways through our days. We long to be heard and companioned just as we are and wherever we are on the spiritual journey.
Finding a soul-companion for the purpose of engaging in an intentional, regularly scheduled conversation may be the next step on your journey. You may have friends and family who support and encourage you on a regular basis, a community with whom you enjoy life together, celebrating birthdays and holidays, or gathering together in faith communities. But to have a companion for the spiritual journey, the soul friend who prepares and welcomes the time and space for tending to the subtle (and not so subtle) ways that God is speaking, can make all the difference in the world.
A spiritual director is such a person—someone trained in the art of deep listening, who is watching and praying with you as you explore the landscape of your inner life and the outward expressions of that life. Here the soul finds its voice, the desires of the heart find a resting place, and the questions and curiosities about identity, faith, and calling are given the respect they deserve. Such hospitable space welcomes us home to self, to God and to others.
If this resonates with you, or feels just like what you’ve been longing for, I welcome you and the opportunity to explore what the next step might look like for you.
