The Most Asked Question...
The most asked question I get when I tell someone I’m a spiritual director is, “What is a spiritual director? What do you do?” I bet you’re not surprised because you may be curious about the same
Spiritual direction is the work of paying attention to your relationship with God. It is the work of soul-tending that we’re all invited to do. It is an ongoing relationship in which a person wanting to pay attention to his or her spiritual journey regularly meets with a Spiritual Director who is trained to listen for the presence and movement of God in life.
A spiritual director or companion is present to the directee through deep listening and personal support. This creates a safe environment to openly explore where God’s Spirit is leading. The directee is encouraged to draw closer to God through conversation, deep listening and prayer. Typical meetings with a director are one hour once or twice per month and can happen in person or via video chat.
A director is not a therapist, a coach, a mentor, teacher, or your BFF. A director is a companion on the way, a trained listener with an ear toward where you are walking on your path and an eye toward the landscape of the soul. A director will offer hospitality and create safe places for you to explore your faith and relationship with God, and will ask questions to help you reveal and experience the Divine presence of grace and truth always and already active in your life.
Finally, as I have been a director, and even longer, as I have been a directee, I find spiritual direction to be one of the greatest gifts in how God forms me, leads me, opens and closes doors, and offers life-giving relationship as we meet together.
